Advanced Driving

What is Advanced Driving?

  • The ability to control the position and speed of your vehicle safely, systematically and smoothly
  • The use of road and traffic conditions to make reasonable progress, unobtrusively with skill and responsibility

What are the chief advantages of becoming an Advanced Driver?

You will be a SAFER, more SKILLFUL and LESS STRESSFUL driver and you will find your DRIVING MORE ENJOYABLE!

You will also find it is more economical,  as the system of advanced driving means there is less wear and tear on your vehicle, less fuel consumption and, in many cases, less insurance!

Skill requires …

  • a positive, but courteous attitude and a high standard of driving competence

Driving competence is …

  • based on Concentration, Observation, Anticipation and Planning co-ordinated with good handling skills

GETTING IT RIGHT!

  • Your vehicle should always be at the right place on the road at the right time, travelling at the right speed  with the right gear engaged.
  • You should ALWAYS be able to stop safely in the distance you can SEE to be clear

What is an Accident?

Two definitions:-

  • “an unforeseen and unplanned event or circumstance”
  • “a rare, random, multi-factor event  whereby one or more persons fail to cope with their environment”

The fact that over 90% of all accidents are  caused by DRIVER ERROR means that the majority are avoidable if drivers become more aware of what is happening around them.  The police no longer refer to “accidents”.  The more accurate term used by them is  “collision”.

The Advanced Driving Test

  • A test is available to drivers of motor cars, motorcycles, minibus and commercial vehicles
  • There is no upper or lower age limit provided you hold a current British or EEC substantive driving license
  • The Advanced Driving Test is a thorough test of driving skill, which lasts for about 90 minutes
  • The Examiners all hold a Police Advanced Driving Certificate and have a traffic patrol background
  • The test covers a wide variety of roads including motorways (if there is one within reach), dual carriageways,  congested urban areas, main roads, narrow country lanes and residential streets
  • You will be expected to show that you  can concentrate and handle your vehicle capably, sympathetically and to exhibit courteous, responsible driving behaviour

The test does NOT include:

  • A theory question paper
    However, KAM do run a
Theory Course three times a year which is open to Associates and Full Members.  N.B.  The Group Observers have found that associates who have attended the Theory Class complete their driver training more easily than those who have not!
  • Commentary
Whilst a driver commentary is no longer a compulsory part of the Advanced Driving Test, it is a valuable tool to aid driver concentration  and to demonstrate to the Examiner your planned approach to your driving.  You will find your Observer will give you every encouragement and help in developing this skill if you wish to do so
