Can I “have a go” without obligation?

Yes, of course.  On the first Sunday of  every month, we meet at 10am on the Crossley Industrial Park in Kidderminster, near to “Curry’s”.  There will be Observers available and you can choose whether to have a Demonstration Drive carried out by an Observer in their  vehicle, or you can have an Assessment Drive in your own vehicle.  If you choose to “have a go” your observer will then take you out for around about 45 minutes and give you a de-brief on your return to the car park.   Should you decide that you would like to proceed then the Assessment Form completed at the end of this drive will be given to you to pass on to your allocated Observer when you join the Group.

Driver Guidance

When you join KAM you will become an Associate Member of the Group.  In addition to all your driver guidance, this will also entitle you to discounted rates (where appropriate) at some of our events.

Initially, your name will be placed on a waiting list until an Observer (where possible, from your area) becomes available.  [While you are waiting, you may wish to take part in one of our series of Theory Classes and/or join us on the 1st Sunday in every month at one of our Fun Sundays.  See Events Section.]  The Observers are  all volunteers who give up their leisure time to provide Associates with the necessary guidance to pass the Advanced Test.  All the KAM Observers are Qualified and include 12 Senior Observers who are on record with IAM Headquarters.

Once allocated, you will be taken for a series of Observed Drives using your own vehicle, commencing with an assessment drive.  As a result of your assessment drive your Observer will  then give you the necessary guidance to raise the standard of your driving to that required in order to pass the Advanced Test.  Observers have only one associate allocated to them at any one time.

How long will it take to become Test Ready?

This will depend on several factors.

  • How many “bad habits” you have developed!
  • How often and how regularly you are able to make yourself available for Observed Runs.
  • How hard you PRACTICE between runs!

It is recommended that you try to meet with your Observer at least once a fortnight, preferably once a week.  When your Observer thinks you are ready for the test, he/she will ask one of  the Senior Observers to sit-in on your drive to give you a Pre-Test Check.  It would be hoped that you would be ready for this after around 6  – 8 runs, but a lot will depend on the effort and time you yourself are prepared to make.

If the Senior Observer agrees that you are Test Ready, then your name will be put forward to IAM Headquarters, and you will be contacted by one of the team of three Examiners in this area,  to arrange a mutually convenient time and day for your test.  If, after the Pre-Test Check, it is felt that there are elements of your driving which still need improving, then your Observer will again work with you to solve any problems.

After passing your test (and KAM currently have a very high percentage of passes) you will become a Full Member of the Group and a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists.
