Three
pictures taken at Radstock, which in the early 70s was home to
an abortive preservation attempt on the former Somerset and
Dorset line. The steam-up was on 29 September 1974, although the
top picture may have been taken on another occasion a couple of
weeks previously.
The top picture depicts an
ancient 0-6-0ST, built by Fox Walker in 1874 (no 242).
The locomotives in steam are "Isabel" Hawthorn Leslie
3437of 1919 and "Henbury" Peckett 1940 of 1937.
Lastly, another shed shot showing (I think) the Peckett from the
nearby Kilmersdon colliery, 1788 of 1929, and unmistakeably,
53808, then recently ex-Barry.
Within a couple of years,
the Radstock site was gone, and the locos dispersed |

Here's
another Peckett, this time it's "No 3" 1990 of 1940 at
Ironbridge power station.
The two Pecketts here were
kept in working order while the old "A" station was
still useable, but in its latter years "A" saw
little use, and on this occasion No 3 was in action on
weighbridge testing duties. |

"Monarch"
articulated 0-4-4-0T (Bagnall 3024 of 1953) arrives at Llanfair
Caereinion with a passenger train in April 1976 |
 |
No
790 "Hardwicke" and Midland compound no 1000 head
westwards with a special, 24 April 1976. The nameboard on the
front reads "The Gainsborough Model Railway Society" |
 |
The
remaining pictures were taken during a day out with a couple of
"industrial" friends in February 1976. Firstly we have
a couple of 2' gauge Rustons, at DSF Refractories Ltd, Friden
brick works. Top is 237914 of 1946, while beneath is an older
locomotive, either 191658 of 1938, or 210960 of 1941 (anyone
know for certain?) |

CEGB
Spondon power station, near Derby, had a fleet of three centre-cab
electric locomotives, which unusually could run from overhead
lines or on batteries. The useable locomotive (above) is No. 1,
English Electric 905 of 1935. Out of use (I think it had
suffered burnt-out motors) is No 3, EE1379 of 1946 |
 |
 |
Lastly,
a couple of pictures at Doe Lea, a private mine in the
Derbyshire coalfield, giving some sort of idea of the surface
arrangements at this small site just beside (but difficult to
see) the M1. |
