Kenneth Gray page 9:

"LNER" (part 2)

Pre-grouping - lots of classes, even if we discount the Scottish variety already visited in page 2. So we'll start with the tender locos, and follow, in page 10, with the tanks

There were still a few of the rebuilt B16s around York in my schoolboy spotter days - but the Raven originals (like 61422) had all gone. Frodingham, 27 May 1961
B12 61535 looks to be in fine fettle (but what's that lurking in the background?*).
The cab makes plain the GNR origin of K2 61728 (which was actually built in 1914 as a K1, rebuilt 1931)
A North Eastern class "R", LNER D20 - it looks well, though I suspect it's steamed for the last time. 62395 was one of the last, if not the last, to be withdrawn, end-1957
62484 "Glen Lyon" is, of course, a Scottish loco - but it's at Carlisle, and I couldn't resist it. It's the 12.25pm SO ex Hawick, 1 July 1961, a regular duty for this loco at the time.
The spotters look bemused.
Back to the former Great Eastern for D16 62606, one of the last Claude Hamiltons. Withdrawn in 1959, none of the class survived.
Sheffield Victoria - and Great Central D11 no 62662 "Prince of Wales".
62797 was one of the last survivors of the former GER 2-4-0s, LNER class E4, going in 1958.
One of the last pre-grouping classes on BR, Q6 63445 is doing what they were good at - slogging uphill on a Tyne Dock - Consett working at Annfield East 15 February 1964
The NER's ultimate 0-8-0 was the 3-cylindered T3 (LNER Q7). Here's no 63472 in what remains of Tyne Dock shed
O4/6 no 63843, a rebuild of one of the larger-boilered O5s. (All the O4s in Kenneth's collection seem to have bent footplating...)
64207 is a Gresley GNR J6 0-6-0...
...and 64284 is a Robinson GCR J11 0-6-0 at Immingham, 27 May 1961
The GER's ultimate 0-6-0 was the J20 - here's 64696 looking very healthy
The North Eastern had quite a variety - the oldest in BR service being the surviving J21s. 65033 is of course still with us, despite being withdrawn, then reinstated, in 1939. We think this is Darlington Shed, 7 May 1960, prior to working the J21 Rail Tour to Carlisle
65177 was a Great Central loco, LNER J10
65445 was a GER J15, quite an antique when this photo was taken. Clearly it's been found something to keep it moderately busy at Stratford 9 October 1961
Another GER loco, 65330 was LNER class J17 Possibly at Kings Lynn, where it was based in the late 50s
North Eastern class P1, LNER J25 no 65720 was one of the last survivors of the class, withdrawn in 1962
65858 is a J27 (NER P3) - the J27s shared with the Q6s in being the last pre-grouping steam on BR

*it's a North British 800bhp Type 1 (class 16), D8404.
