We took a day off on the 2nd of July, and the following day we left Espinho for a ride up the Douro valley to Regua, which would be our last Portuguese base. Regua was the junction for the metre-gauge line to Chaves, and we were able to see an interesting variety of workings. One of the large outside-cylindered 4-6-0s is seen leaving with a passenger working, and 4-cylinder compound 2-8-0 no 754, built by North British, arrives on a freight. Another 2-8-0 makes an interesting contrast with a pair of metre-gauge 2-4-6-0Ts.

It was here that we got our first photos of what we thought of as the "B12"s - the inside-cylindered 4-6-0s resembling the GER design. Two such locomotives are seen heading east, on the viaduct and just off the end of it. The viaduct carried mixed gauge tracks, and the 2-4-6-0T-headed train has just crossed it with an evening departure.
